Great job on the popsicle stick flag art, everyone! (see right) Each student was given 5-6 popsicle sticks and painted them red, white or blue and then decorated with contrasting colors. The sticks were collected and glued to posterboard and the flag now hangs behind the Oval Office (aka teacher's desk). Right click on the image and select "view image" to see it enlarged.

History states that red, white and blue were chosen as the colors represent, valor (red), liberty and purity (white) justice and loyalty (blue) Did you know? The thirteen horizontal red and white stripes represent the original colonies of the U.S. The Canton is the correct name for the dark blue rectangular area on the top left quarter of the American Emblem. Betsy Ross is the name of the lady who sewed the first the American Flag in 1776. There is an American Flag on the moon! Neil Armstrong planted it there during the first moon landing on July 20 1969. As there is no air or breeze on the moon it was attached to horizontal pole this gave the impression that it was flying! The American Flag has various nicknames including 'Old Glory', 'Stars and Stripes' and 'The Star-Spangled Banner. The American Flag symbolizes a past history, it gives Americans a feeling of pride and unity bringing together its many states as one. |
